Case Study: Dynamic Mascot Logo for HYENA Activewear
In the highly competitive fitness and apparel market, an activewear brand’s symbol needs to instantly communicate its core ethos. When approached to design the identity for a new activewear brand named HYENA, the brief was crystal clear: deliver a bold and aggressive logo that embodies the strength, agility, and power of the animal itself. The goal was to craft a symbol that felt dynamic, fierce, and relentlessly ready for action.
The Challenge:
Creating an animal mascot for an athletic brand requires capturing a sense of kinetic energy within a static image. The design needed to avoid looking like a traditional sports team mascot or a complex illustration, leaning instead towards a sleek, modern brand mark that would look at home on premium sportswear.
Furthermore, clothing brands require highly versatile logos that remain legible whether embroidered on a small garment tag, printed on a technical t-shirt, or scaled up for a gym bag.
The Design Rationale:
Capturing Momentum & Form To convey agility and power, the hyena is depicted mid-leap, launching forward with intense focus. The sleek, streamlined profile strips away unnecessary anatomical details, reducing the animal to its most aerodynamic and muscular form. The sharp angles of the ears and the aggressive, forward-leaning posture give the mark a fierce, unstoppable momentum.
Mastering Negative Space The defining feature of this logo is its clever use of negative space. Rather than drawing the entire animal, the design uses strategic cuts and flowing lines to imply the hyena’s musculature and distinctive markings. Because activewear logos must be reproduced across various mediums and fabrics, the symbol was built as a pristine vector graphic in Adobe Illustrator, ensuring flawless print production and scalability.
Adaptability for Apparel Due to the reliance on negative space, the logo required careful consideration for different fabric colours. To solve this, two distinct versions were developed:
Light Backgrounds: The primary design uses the positive space to form the shadows and contours of the hyena in a single solid colour or gradient allowing the light background colour to become the body of the animal.
Dark Backgrounds: For black or dark garments, an inverted version was created. This iteration uses a crisp white stroke to define the outer silhouette and interior details, ensuring the hyena stands out sharply without losing its internal structure or fierce expression.
The Outcome
The final result is a powerful, high-impact brand mark that perfectly answers the client’s brief. The HYENA logo is aggressive yet refined, providing the new activewear brand with a dynamic symbol that looks instantly credible and ready to disrupt the fitness apparel market.
