Band Logo Design for a Tribute Act
For any working band, a strong visual identity is crucial for connecting with fans. This case study breaks down the professional band logo design process for Supreme Queen, a world-class Queen tribute act, showcasing how a strategic approach can create a powerful and authentic brand.
The Challenge: The Challenge for This Band Logo Design
Evoking an Era, Not Copying It.
Scott Maley, frontman for Supreme Queen, needed a new logo as part of a major rebrand. The core challenge was to create a concept that was instantly recognizable and representative of Queen’s “golden era” in the 70s and 80s.
A key constraint was the need to create a design that felt authentic and nostalgic while remaining entirely original—one of the unique challenges of a successful tribute band.
The Design Rationale for this Band Logo Design
To meet this challenge, I immersed myself in the music and artwork of the era to fully absorb the look and feel. The goal was to capture the essence—the energy, the glamour, the showmanship—while steering clear of anything that felt like a cheap or tacky imitation.
It was essential that the final design worked flawlessly in both monotone for simplicity and in a full-colour, “dazzling” version for maximum impact. The final concept uses a bold, semi-circular shape and custom typography with a signature 70s flair, creating a mark that is both a tribute and a unique identity in its own right.
The Outcome: A Versatile and Hard-Working Identity
The final logo provided the band with a powerful, professional, and versatile brand mark—a fantastic result for this band logo design project. Since the successful completion of the initial logo, our partnership has grown to include creating a wide variety of other artwork for the band, including drum skins, posters, and large-format stage backdrops, proving the value of a robust and flexible identity system.
