The official Bee Cycles mascot logo, featuring a friendly illustrated bee with a yellow and black bicycle chainring forming its round body.

Case Study: Friendly Mascot Logo & Van Signage for Bee Cycles

When a business operates on the move, its brand identity needs to work twice as hard to capture attention. Bee Cycles, a mobile bicycle repair company based in Amblecote, near Stourbridge, needed a cohesive visual identity that immediately communicated their services while remaining highly approachable. This project involved developing a friendly mascot logo and designing high-impact van signage to serve as a mobile billboard across the local area.

The Challenge:

The primary challenge was twofold: creating a mascot that was instantly recognisable as both a bee and a bicycle repair service, and designing a vehicle wrap that was legible at a glance.

Because Bee Cycles relies on their van as their primary marketing tool, the vehicle graphics needed to grab attention on the road without overwhelming potential customers with cluttered information. The client specifically requested a friendly, welcoming mascot to help build trust with local cyclists.

Design Rationale:

The Mascot & Logo Formulation

To merge the two core concepts—a bee and cycling—the design utilises a clever visual substitution. The body of the friendly bee mascot is formed from a detailed bicycle chainring, creating an immediate association with bike mechanics.

I created two different concepts for the client to choose from and they went with the option with some white left shown at the front and rear of the vehicle as opposed to the full wrap.

  • Colour Palette: A striking, high-contrast yellow and black palette was chosen not only for its obvious connection to bees but also for its exceptional visibility.

  • Typography: The bold, clean, sans-serif typography for “BEE CYCLES” is stacked centrally within the chainring, ensuring the company name remains the focal point of the badge.

Vehicle Signage & Layout The van wrap was designed for a Ford Transit Custom Cargo van (2018-2019 L1H1). To maximize visual impact, the design employs a dynamic diagonal split across the side panels, transitioning from a heavy black rear into the striking brand yellow toward the front.

  • Information Hierarchy: The layout ensures that critical contact information, such as the phone number (07970 423443) and website (www.beecycles.uk), is immediately visible.

  • Service Clarity: A clear, bulleted list of offerings—including Servicing, Upgrades, Restorations, and their “Collect, Fix & Return” model—is cleanly displayed on the rear doors for drivers stopped behind the vehicle in traffic.

  • Production Readiness: Because vehicle wraps require flawless large-format printing, the design was built using robust vector assets in Adobe Illustrator. Strict attention was paid to the CMYK colour values during the file preparation to guarantee that the signature yellow would reproduce accurately and vibrantly on the final vinyl wrap, avoiding any dulling or colour-shifting during the print process.

The Outcome

The final result is a cohesive, highly visible brand identity that perfectly fits the client’s brief. The Bee Cycles van now acts as a bold, moving advertisement that builds local brand awareness around Amblecote and Stourbridge.

The friendly mascot successfully softens the often technical nature of bicycle mechanics, inviting cyclists of all levels to reach out for repairs.
