Negative Space Logo Design: The Apogee Case Study
This case study details a negative space logo design created for Apogee Associates, a UK-based specialist consultancy. The project required a design that incorporated the initial ‘A’ with a mountain concept, and this is a look at how that creative challenge was met using a clever negative space solution.
Apogee Logo Design: The Challenge of the Brief
I was approached by Apogee Associates, a new specialist consultancy firm providing Research and Development (R&D) tax credit services to innovative UK businesses.
The creative brief was direct and presented a distinct challenge. It contained two mandatory components: the final design had to be derived from the letter ‘A’, and it must also incorporate the motif of a mountain. Aesthetically, the brand mark needed to be clean, simple, and modern to reflect the innovative nature of their clients.
Process & Rationale for this Negative Space Logo Design
The final design is a direct result of balancing these two contrasting ideas—classicism and modernism—to create a single, cohesive brand mark.
Conceptual Goals: Beyond the Obvious
While combining a mountain shape with the letter ‘A’ seems straightforward, the goal of a truly professional logo design is to avoid the most literal interpretation. My primary objective for the Apogee logo was to create an intelligent and intriguing brand mark.
Basing a logo on a single, strong letterform is a timeless approach used by many of the world’s leading brands (External link).
Instead of simply placing one element on top of the other, I wanted to integrate the mountain in a subtle way that rewarded the viewer upon a second look.
The Solution: A Mountain in Negative Space
The key to achieving this subtlety was to utilise negative space. This is a classic design technique that can create clever and memorable logos.
I focused on the horizontal crossbar of the letter ‘A’, shaping it to create the distinct silhouette of a snow-capped mountain peak within the letter’s negative space.
This solution meant the design fulfilled the brief’s requirements in a unique and visually engaging manner.
Final Rationale: A Clean & Meaningful Emblem
This approach to negative space logo design directly achieved the clean, simple, and modern aesthetic the client envisioned. The final emblem is a single, strong shape that contains multiple layers of meaning, making the Apogee logo both distinctive and intellectually satisfying for their professional client base.
